Ghiyath al Din Tughlaq, Silver Tanka, 10.77g, Mulk-i Tilang Mint, AH 724, Obv: Arabic legend “al-Muwakkal Ali Allah Abu al-Muzaffar Tughlaq Shah”; in circle, Mint and date in words in the margin, Rev: Arabic legend “Ghiyath al-Dunya wa al-Din Nasir Amir al-Mumineen” (wrongly listed in G&G as D326 and attributed to Muhammad bin Tughlaq). Very fine+, extremely rare. In 1321, Ghiyath al-Din Tughlaq sent his eldest son Fakhr al-Din Jauna urf Ulugh Khan (later known as Muhammad bin Tughlaq), to Deogir to plunder the Hindu kingdoms of Warangal and Tilang (Telangana). His first attempt was a failure. Four months later, Ghiyath al-Din sent large reinforcements and this time Ulugh Khan succeeded. Warangal fell and it was renamed ‘Sultanpur’. Coins were struck during this campaign from Deogir (Qutbabad) and after the conquest, from ‘Mulk-i Tilang’ mint, which must have been located somewhere in the Telangana province.
