Qutb al-Din Mahmud Shah, Silver Tanka, 9.81g, Fathabad Mint, AH 896, Obv: Arabic legend “Qutb al-Dunya wa al-Din Abu al-Mujahid Mahmud Shah al-Sultan ibn Firuz Shah al-Sultan”, Rev: Shahada followed by mint-name and AH date in numbers (G&G# B666). Small test mark on reverse otherwise extremely fine, extremely rare. Coins of this ephemeral Sultan are extremely rare and known from three mints – Fathabad, Dar al-Darb and Khazana. Of the three only Fatahbad suggests a real place name of issue, the others merely stand for ‘Mint’ and ‘Treasury’. The two or three coins known so far all have date engraved as ‘892’, whereas on this specimen the date is correctly engraved as 896.
