Tukoji Rao II, Silver Nazarana Mudra, Pattern / Trial Strike, 11.06g, SE 1780, Obv: Devnagari legend “Shri Shankaranucharya Ahalya Jayati around sunface”, Rev: Word ‘Mudra’ in a floral whorl, Devnagari legend “Holkaraviturako Shakra(puraji)…” (KM# 17). Very fine+, exceedingly rare. The enigmatic ‘Mudra’ coinage was struck by Indore in the immediate aftermath of the 1857-59 Revolt. It was probably an unsuccessful attempt to introduce a highly innovative, partly machine manufactured coinage which did not go beyond the production of patterns, trial strikes and occasional presentation issues. Coins dated SE 1780 (1858) are the earliest.
