The minister Khwaja-i Jahan, who was unaware that Firuz Tughlaq had declared himself the claimant to the throne while campaigning in Sindh, installed Mahmud for a short while after the death of Muhammad bin Tughluq. Upon his return to Delhi, Firuz deposed Mahmud to end his reign.
