Tipu Sultan, Silver Double Rupee, 22.84g, Nagar Mint, AH 1200 Dalaw / RY 4, Obv: Persian legend “Ahmad din dar Jahn Ast Raushan ze fatah haidar he zarb Nagar saal Dalaw sanah 1200 hijri”, Rev: Persian legend “Huw al-Sultan al waheed al adil sooyim bahari saal Dalaw sanah 4 julus” (KM# 107). Extremely fine, exceedingly rare. ‘Nagar’ was a short form for Haidarnagar, which was the name given to Bednur, the capital of the Nayakas of Ikkeri or Keladi, by Tipu’s father Hyder Ali. Nagar was special for Tipu because he wrested in back from the British in 1783 when Col. Matthews occupied it briefly during the first Anglo-Mysore War. This was Tipu’s first major victory as a military commander. The mint at Nagar is the only mint of Tipu which struck coins for every year in his reign, including coins dated in his last regnal year dated AM1227, when he died only a month into it. Silver coins struck at Nagar are some of rarest and most sought after coins amongst Tipu’s issues. Double, one and half rupee are known and all are struck from his 4th to 7th year.
