Archaic Punch Marked, Western Maharashtra / Deccan region, Upper Krishna valley, generally attributed to Kuntala Janapada, Silver Double Karshapana, 6.48g, A bold taurine-like symbol with two small lines to the left and trigger on obverse. Very fine, exceedingly rare. The fabric and type of the coin is very similar to the 'pulley'-type punch-marked coins known chiefly from a small area near Wai, upstream Krishna River. Two similar coins were reported from the earliest find of these coins at Sultanpur in around 1875. However, subsequent finds from the same region have not yielded coins of this type. Most likely, these coins represent the earliest indigenous circulatory currency in the Deccan, to the South of the Vindhya Mountains, structured in a denominational system based on the Karshapana standard.
