Maukharis of Kanyakubja (Kannauj), Avantivarman, Silver Drachm, 1.70g, Obv: Head with crescent facing left, Rev: Fan-tailed peacock in centre, Brahmi legend “…vanipati Shrivantivarmo Di…” from 3 to 9 o'clock (Pieper# 3706). Very fine, very rare. The Maukharis had many branches but one branch established itself at Kanyakubja (Kannauj) during the 6th Century. This branch held sway over the Ganga-Yamuna doab and came into conflict with Harshavardhana in the 7th century. Avantivarman was the penultimate ruler of the dynasty. His son Grahavarman was famously defeated by Harsha to avenge his brother Rajyavardhana’s murder, according to Harshacharita of Banabhatta.
