Feudatories of the Chalukyas / the Rashtrakutas, Coastal Karnataka Region, Uninscribed Gold Gadyana, 4.72g, Obv: Boar and a Lotus flower with a long stem, Rev: The shape of an altar or Peetha (the 'Asana') for an icon. Very fine, extremely rare. The most interesting aspect of the coin is the presence of pseudo-Arabic legend in the margins on obverse and reverse. This feature is borrowed from the Gold Dinars of the Baghdad Caliphate arriving in trade on the Karnataka coast. As such the coin is an interesting testimony to the trade relations in the maritime region of the Indian Ocean.
