Gond kingdom of Devgadh Branch, Gorakh Shah, son of Kesari Shah, Copper Dam, 11.40g, Obv: Ceremonial broad-blade sword (Khanda) in a cartouche in the centre, Devanagari legend “…ja Kesa(ri Sha)h Suta Koka (Sa)hi Go…”, Rev: Devanagari legend “…Maharaja Kokasahi Mahipati Ra…” (Not listed in major sources, possibly the first ever known coin of this ruler). Very fine+, extremely rare. The Gond kingdom of Devgarh was established by Jatba ‘Ajanubahu’, who consolidated power over territories previously held by Gawli princes Ranashur and Ghanashur. The dynasty's defining characteristics included resilience against Mughal incursions in 1635 that led to temporary tribute payments. Gorakh Shah was the third ruler to hold the titles ‘Koka Shah’, ‘Mahipati’ and ‘Bhupati Raj’. His rule was contemporary to Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The full legends on the coin can be restored, with comparison to other Gond coins, to ‘Shri Maharaja Kesari Shah Suta Koka Sahi Gorakh Shah’ (Obv) and ‘Shri Shiva Maharaja Koka Sahi Mahipati Rao Devgadh’.
