Burhan Nizam Shah II Abbasi, Silver, 1.77g, Burhanabad Mint, Obv: Persian legend “Zarb Burhanabad” in circle, Rev: The Shi’i version of Shahada (Not listed in G&H). Extremely fine, exceedingly rare. During the short reign of Burhan II, rare silver coins struck to a 7gm standard were issued. They were all virtually unknown two decades ago but a few have since turned up on the market. The metrology of these coins is complicated as they evidently do not fit in any Indian standard. Most likely, they were influenced by Iranian coins. Iran and the Sultanate of Ahmadnagar shared deep religious connection through the Shi’i faith and also via trade through Konkan ports like Chaul and Dabhol. While a couple of half units have been known, this is the first instance of a ¼ unit of this type coming to light.
