Guptas, Vishnugupta Chandraditya, Gold Dinar, 8.80g, “Archer” type, Obv: King, nimbate, standing facing, head left, holding bow in right hand, arrow in left, Garuda standard to left, Brahmi legend “Vishnu” below arm, Rev: Lakshmi seated facing on lotus, holding diadem in her right hand, lotus in her left, traces of Brahmi legend to right and tamgha in left field (BMC Guptas 591-605, S. Kumar 17.13.1). Very fine, exceedingly rare.
Vishnugupta is generally considered to be the last recognized king of the Gupta Empire. His reign lasted 10 years, approximately from 540 to 550 AD. From the fragment of his clay sealing discovered at Nalanda during the excavations of 1927–28, it is revealed that he was the son of Kumaragupta III and a grandson of Narasimhagupta. His coins were found in the Kalighat Hoard. They are generally struck to the heavy-weight dinara standard, exceeding 9gm weight; however, this coin’s weight is a bit lower.
