Jahangir, Silver Rupee, 11.42g, Ahmadabad Mint, AH 1020/ RY 6, struck with ornamental borders on both sides with fine Nastaliq calligraphy, of a new type unreported and unpublished before. Extremely fine, exceedingly rare. It is very rare that a completely new type for a mint under Jahangir comes to light. This coin fits the bill - it is struck at Ahmadabad in a new type for the mint. Along with Jahangir's name, it carries the name of the month (Shahrewar) and the name of the mint, both inscribed within highly ornamented borders. Unusually, the calligraphic style is Nastaliq, when all other coins of Ahmedabad around this time are struck with legnds in the Naskhi style. Jahangir abolished the 25% overweight 'Sawai' standard on 11 Ardibihisht of his RY 6. However, contrary to this order, some mints like Lahore continued striking Sawai coins for some more time. At Agra, a series with ornamental borders that alternated with round and square coins was launched. The feature of ornamental borders and a backdrop of delicate floral decorations for well-executed Nastaliq calligraphy, was also introduced at a few other mints like Lahore, Tatta and Akbarnagar for rupees struck to a normal weight standard. However, it was unknown for Ahmadabad till date. The changeover of the weight standards from heavy to normal presumably caused some inconvenience as coins struck in the immediate aftermath, bearing months Khurdad to Shahrewar of AH1020/RY6 are very rare for most provincial mints. The only other mint to have struck coins in type similar to this coin of Ahmadabad in Shahrewar AH 1020/ RY 6 is Burhanpur and these issues are also very rare.
