Alamgir II Silver Rupee, 11.25g, Qandhar Mint in Deccan, AH 1127 (error for 1167)/ RY 7. Complete Mint name on bottom of reverse. Patinated, extremely fine for type, extremely rare. These coins struck under the authority of Nizams of Hyderabad. The fortress of Qandhar (Kandhar) lies near Nanded city in South Marathwada, Maharashtra. It is a strategic land fort with history stretching back to the Rashtrakutas and for some time, served as their capital. During the mid-18th century, it was under the control of a local jagirdar under the Nizam of Hyderabad. A mint operated sporadically here, during the reigns of Muhammad Shah, Ahmad Shah and Alamgir II. All coins of this mint are very rare and the issues of Alamgir II particularly so. They carry the name of the king as ‘Alamgir Thani’ in the obverse legend.
