Nolambas of Nolambavadi, Nanni Nolamba, Gold Punch Marked, 1 1/2 Gadyana, 5.80g, Uniface, Total of 21 punches struck deeply and sharply on a thin flan. Punches are organised in two concentric circular forms around the central punch. The central punch consists of recumbent Nandi facing right, seated on a floral pedestal. The first tier of punches has 12 x ‘No’, an initial of the word Nolamba woven like a garland. The outer periphery punches consist of 4x recumbent Nandi facing right in four cardinal directions, 2x “Sri” legend in Kannada, 1x Legend punch “Nolamba” legend in Kannada, and 1x Symbol punch of “Elephant Goad with battle axe” which is a kind of coat of arms for the Nolambas on obverse. Extremely fine, exceedingly rare. 1st known in Auction. The Nolambas were one of the significant political powers of South India with their initial capital at Chitradurga. They shifted their capital to Hemavathi subsequently and ruled for nearly 300 years. They remained mostly a significant feudatory dynasty and with a turbulent rule. They constantly suffered war with the Gangas and hence their coins are extremely rare.
