Khan Bahadur Khan, Silver, Mutiny Rupee, Bareli Mint, in the name of Shah Alam II, mint name at top on rev, AH 1274/73 (KM 46). A small die-cut on an edge otherwise Extremely Fine with lustre, Great Rarity for the patriots of India. During the Mutiny or 1st Revolt of Independence of 1857-59, Khan Bahadur Khan, a descendent of Hafiz Rahmat Khan and the Rohilla Nawab of Bareli (1758-1776), declared himself independent of the Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar. The Independent Government sat at Bareli, issued Rupees on the Mughal pattern of Shah Alam II with current Hijri year and a regnal year, 73 dating from AH 1202 (AD 1788), the starting year corresponds with end of the Rohilla power due to the death of Ghulam Qadir. The coin is of highest rarity as subsequently the rule of Khan Bahadur Khan was dismissed by the British and most of his coins were melted down. Such historical awareness about sovereignty is significant, and this coin bears a unique testimony to it. The coin is known only from a couple of them in the Museums and not a single is found in any private collections. This is for the first time that such an historical coin has appeared for a public auction.
