Afzalabad is a completely new mint to have come to light. The mint-name may be identified with the town presently known as Afzalgarh, located in Dist. Bijnor, UP. Afzalgarh was founded by Afzal Khan, a close relative (cousin or nephew) of Najib ud-Daula or Najib Khan Rohilla, the supremo at Delhi during 1761-1770. The date on the coin suggests it was struck during or shortly after the war between the Rohillas and the Nawab of Awadh (aided by the British), in which the Rohillas suffered a severe defeat and much of their Eastern domains were won over by Awadh.
