Chandra Gupta II or ‘III’, Gold Dinar, 8.69 g, ‘Archer’ type, Obv: nimbate king, standing in Tribhanga posture, holding bow and arrow in separate hands. Garuda banner behind the hand that holds the arrow; Brahmi legend Chandra below the hand holding the bow and a symbol of fire altar to the left of the king’s head, Rev: Goddess Lakshmi seated on lotus, Brahmi legend Shri Vikrama in the right field (Altekar Class II, var. O, Pl. V, no. 17). Extremely fine, very rare. Altekar, and following him P L Gupta, were both uncertain of the placement of the issuer of this heavy type of Dinars. Altekar voiced a theory, given the similarities in weight, fabric and symbolism, that the ‘Chandra’ who struck these coins might be a distinct ruler than Chandra Gupta II. P L Gupta further commented that these are issues of a later king and he should be regarded as Chandra Gupta III.
