Mumbai, Gold Mohur, 10.93g, in the name of Muhammad Shah, no RY inscribed, complete mint name on bottom of rev. Extremely fine, exceedingly rare. This is an exceptionally rare coin, not represented in the Paul Stevens Collection, c/o Ashmolean Museum. A couple of other comparable pieces are known with RY11, however on this coin the RY appears to have been intentionally omitted. This is perhaps because the East India Company’s financial position was not very secure in early 18th century and the British would have tried not to let their coins be discounted by Shroffs or money-changers. As one of the ways the discount was applied was on the basis of the RY, omitting the RY would have meant the shroffs would find it impossible when the coin was struck and how long it had been in circulation.
