Shams-al-din Kayumarth, Silver Tanks, 10.93g, Hazrat Delhi Mint, Obv: In round borders, Arabic legend al-Imam al-Musta‘asim Amir al-Moninin, date and mint details in the border, partly truncated, Rev: Within double lined rectangular border, Arabic legend al-Sultan al-‘Azam Shams al-Dunya wa al-Din Abu al-Muzaffar Kayumarth al-Sultan (G&G# D190). Extremly fine, exceedingly rare. The short reign of this 3-year old baby Sultan was prompted by a political crisis at the end of the rule of the last Turk Sultan of Delhi, Mu’izz al-Din Kaiqubad, the father of Kayumarth who was an ineffectual and debauched ruler. Displeased with the appointment of the Afghan Jalal al-Din Firuz Khaljis as the commander of the army, the Turkish nobles of the court decided to topple Kaiqubad by elevating his boy Kayumarth to the throne. But Firuz marched on to Delhi and having deposed Kayumarth and murdered Kaiqubad, he crowned himself as the ruler and thus began a long list of Afghan Sultans at Delhi.
