Akbar, Silver ½ Rupee, 5.16g, Agra Mint, Obv: Name of the ruler, Rev: Kalima. Cleaned, very fine+, very rare. This coin is struck from the dies usually employed for striking Gold mohurs and it weighs a little less than a half rupee. Exactly what prompted the issue of such a coin is not certain but there are a few other odd instances (like square rupees) known with the similar die design. It is plausible that they were struck as ‘show’-pieces or ‘trial strikes’.
