Junnar (Farsi version ‘Junair’) is a town of great antiquity situated at the head of the Nanaghat pass on the river Kukdi in Western Maharashtra. As the date on this coin reveals, it was struck during the final years of Shajahan’s reign when Aurangzeb was appointed as the Governor of Deccan and pursued a vigorous campaign against Shivaji and the Adil Shahi Sultanate. Junnar, with its proximity to Pune the stronghold of Shivaji, was a strategic place and turned into a Mughal garrison town at this time.
