Akbar, Copper, Ruba’i or 1/4 Dam, 4.78g, Obv: Swastika within dotted circle, Rev: Persian legend “Ruba’i”. Very fine, exceedingly rare. Soon after celebrating the Islamic “Millenium” of the Nuqtavi tradition, Akbar issued a series of mintless and dateless coins, indirectly reflecting his status as an enlightened supreme king in a post-millenial ‘timeless’ world. The earliest fractional copper issues in this type had only the denomination mentioned on them, with a geometric design appearing on the other side. ‘Nisfi’ (from Farsi Nisf meaning ‘one half’) and ‘Ruba’i’ (from Farsi Rub’a meaning ‘one fourth’) were the denominational terms used on these issues. The Ruba’I is perhaps the rarest of these coins. Only a handful is known to exist.
