Rajputana / North-East Gujarat region, Anonymous Copper, 3.00g, VS 1653, probably issued by one of the semi-independent Rajput dynasties of c. 15th-16th century. Very fine, rare. These coins do not bear any name of the issuer but only have a Devanagari legend which mentions the year of issue, prefixed with the word ‘Samvat’. Most likely the issuer chose to remain anonymous because he was a vassal of the Mughals or one of the preceding Sultanate dynasties. VS1653 would mean the coin is struck in the final years of Emperor Akbar, at a time when the Ranas of Chitor had not yet been fully subdued.
