The legend Kadakanam appearing on coins is a Prakrit rendering of the word Kshudrakanam who have found mention in the Mahabharata at several instances. The first literary reference to Kshudrakas appears in Panini’s work who mentions of a Kshudraka-Malava sena alliance. Shri R.G Bhandarkar has identified Kshudrakas with the Oxydrakai mentioned by Greek historians. By way of the information provided by Megasthanes, The Kshudrakas were also one of the most powerful tribes that Alexander encountered on the banks of the Indus in 4th Century BC (Ref: Tribal Coins of Ancient India, Handa, Devendra:2007).
