Abbasid / Rashtrakuta, Abbasid Caliph al-Mu'tasim, Indian imitation of a Gold Dinar, 4.26g, most likely of Dimashq (Damascus) Mint, AH 218-227 / AD 833-842. Very fine, rare. Islamic gold coins reached India during the medieval period due to a thriving trade between the Persian Gulf and India’s western coast. They were treated as objects of high acceptability and widely imitated in the Rashtrakuta kingdom. This is one such coin and bears interesting testimony to India’s maritime trade links with the World during 9th – 11th centuries.
