Akbar, Silver Rupee, 11.36g, “Kalima” type, Dar al Khilafah Malpur Mint, AH 983 (KM# 80.14). Very fine, very rare. Malpur, located to the North-East of Gujarat’s capital city of Ahmadabad, became an important strategic supply point in Akbar’s campaign against the Sultans of Gujarat. A mint producing to strike copper and silver coins was set up here, presumably to provide quick payment to the soldiers and also a launching pad for Gujarat’s integration into the Mughal monetary system. The mint here only functioned for a few years until Ahmadabad became a fully functional and productive mint. Rupees are scarce and this specimen, with a fully recognizable mint name is particularly desirable.
