Guptas, Struck to the post-Skanda Gupta, Puru Gupta/ Mihirakula ?, Gold Dinar, 9.44g, “Suvarna” standard, in the name of ‘Vikramaditya’, Obv: Archer king standing holding bow and arrow, Garuda standard (with halo around Garuda) in the background, Brahmi legend “Parahitakar Raja….” Partly visible to right, Rev: Nimbate Lakshmi seated cross-legged on lotus throne, holding lotus in one hand a noose in the other, Brahmi legend “Vikramadi(tyah)” to right and a Tamgha to left (S Kumar# p. 384, var.B). Extremely fine, extremely rare. These coins, without a king’s name below the archer king’s hand on obverse, have been attributed to Puru Gupta in the past; however, fabric and metal analysis have indicated that they are to be placed in a period after Skanda Gupta’s reign. There are suggestions that they might have been issued by the Huna king Mihirakula but they are not yet confirmed.
