Bharpur Singh, Silver Rupee, 11.01g, “Guru Gobindshahi” couplet, VS 1909 (CE 1852), Nabh Kamal Mint. Very fine, very rare. These coins were not meant for circulation but were more like Nazrana issues. Owing to the Gobindshahi couplet these issues are accepted as Sikh issues.Rulers of Cis Sutlej States had the name of the mint as Sahrand, or Sarhand (only in case of Jind state) ever since they started minting coins. Only exception we find is on these and a few similar coins of Nabha. Also, all coins of Cis Sutlej states have on the obverse the couplet attributing the minting of coins to Ahmed Shah Abdalli till more than 60 years after the death of Ahmed Shah Abdalli. All Cis Sutlej states were British Protectorates and needed the permission of the British to mint coins. The British did allow them to mint coins in the name of Abdalli because they thought of this as a harmless exercise, but did not allow them to put the Gurushahi (Nanakshahi or Gobindshahi) couplet on their coins. These and a few coins of Patiala state are exceptions.
