Konch, Silver Rupee,11.20g, in the name of Shah Alam II, AH1175/RY3, (Not published in M&W). Very fine+, extremely rare. The town of Konch was earlier in possession of Naro Shankar, the Peshwa’ssubahdar for Bundelkhand. After the battle of Panipat, the Maratha hold in Bundelkhand was threatened by Rohillas and the Nawab of Awadh; however, Malhar Rao Holkar re-established it in mid-1760s. Konch was then transferred to the Holkars. No coins of Konch mint of the pre-Holkar period were listed by Mahwshwari& Wiggins, but a few specimens in the name of Alamgir II, RY6 have been known. The rupee offered here is in continuation of these coins, further into the reign of Shah Alam II. These are very rare and less than five are known to the cataloguer.
