c. late 14th century, Copper, 5.44g, “Thane” type, copying designs and names of Muhammad Tughlaq and/or Muhammad Bahmani, not read with certainty as yet, Obv: crude rendering of Muhammad Shah bin… Shah al-‘Azam…, Rev: crude rendering of al-Sultan al-‘Azam… Tughlaqi….. Very fine, extremely rare. Coins of this variety were discovered in a small hoard ay Yeoor, near Thane, north of Mumbai. They are most likely to be issues of local rulers, who established themselves as vassals of the Delhi Sultans in the immediate aftermath of the fall of the Yadava kingdom of Devagiri and its successor state in the North Konkan region. We know the names of some of them, like Hambira Rao and Aluji Nakhwa, from inscriptional sources.
