Satavahanas, Newase-Paithan region, Siri Satakani (c.100-50BC), Lead, 21.51g, “Bull” type, Obv: Bull with tail curled above the hump, charging to right, small circular symbol below, Brahmi legend “Raño Siri Satakanisa” above, Rev: A composite symbol of Nandipadas inside a rectangle with arrows at four cardinal points, with more Nandipadas in quadrants. Very fine, extremely rare. The late Dr Shobhana Gokhale opined that the obverse depiction represents the Vedic sacrifice of Vrshotsarja where a young bull was ceremoniously let free from agricultural labour. The symbol on the reverse is unique to this type of coins.
