Satavahanas, Newase-Paithan region, Siri Satakani (c.100-50BC), Lead, 26.02g, “Gajalakshmi” type, Obv: Goddess Lakshmi, standing on Lotus, and being lustrated by Elephants on lotuses on either side, traces of legend “…Satakanisa” above, Rev: Tree with broad leaves within a railing, traces of ancillary symbols around. Very fine, extremely rare. Unlike the seated Lakshmi types of Junnar / Nasik, the standing Lakshmi types of Newase-Paithan are characteristically of a much heavier weight, many times exceeding 25gm. They were first published by the late Dr Shobhana Gokhale, from the collection of Shantilal Purwar of Aurangabad.
