Nashik- Gulshanabad, Silver 1/2 Rupee, 5.64g, in the name of Shah Alam II, AH 1241, Obv: Devnagari “Ra”, Rev: Jaripatka or flag flowing to left symbol. Extremely fine, very rare. Although listed as ‘Maratha’ by Maheshwari & Wiggins, the date this rupee bears clearly suggests it was struck under the authority of the East India Company, as a transitional issue. After the Maratha rule ended in 1818, the Company’s government took a consolidated view of mint operations and continued only a few out of the many mints functioning under license during the Peshwa’s rule. Nashik was one such mint and it was expected to meet the currency needs of North-Western Maharashtra.
