Ancient Vidarbha, Pre-Satavahana Period, c. 200-150BC, Uninscribed cast coin Alloyed / Iron-rich Copper, 15.57g, “Gajalakshmi” type, Uniface, Goddess Lakshmi standing facing, flanked by Elephants on both sides, pouring water over her from pots held in their raised trunks on obverse (Unpublished in major sources). Very fine+, extremely rare. A series of often heavy, uninscribed cast coins circulated around the ancient site of Pauni wherein the issues are characteristically made of an iron rich alloy, perhaps sourced from the hilly tracts of South Eastern Vidarbha. The coins present an interesting and unique metallurgy unknown from any other part of India. Apart from the more usual elephant type coins of the region, an extremely rare 'Gajalakshmi' type also comprises the series.
