Ancient Marathwada / Vidarbha, Pre-Satavahana period, c. 200-150BC, Uninscribed die-struck Lead, 4.93g, “Gajalakshmi” type, Obv: Goddess Lakshmi seated frontally on a low throne with body in profile, two Elephants standing on stylized Lotus flowers flank her, lustrating her with pots held in their raised trunks, Rev: Traces of symbols tree-in-railing partly visible (Unpublished in major sources). Very fine+, extremely rare. The depiction of Gajalakshmi here adds another iconographic dimension to the known repertoire of her representations. The goddess is shown seated in profile on a stool-like throne with rest of her body moved sideways. This is a unique depiction of the goddess in any Deccan coinage; the closest parallel to this is seen on the local archaic punch-marked silver coins from Saurashtra.
