Ancient West Marathwada / East Vidrabha, Monarchical coinage of pre-Satvahanas period, c.150-100BC, King Viga- Vigraha, Copper, 7.57g, Obv: Bull walking to right with tail raised, Brahmi legend “Raño Vi(ga)…” above, Rev: Bold Nandipada drawn by double lines, topped by a triangle-headed standard (Unpublished in major sources). Very fine, extremely rare. Viga (Vigraha) was evidently yet another of the independent pre-Satvahanas ruler of Central Maharashtra who appears to have extended his sway into the territories held by king Sebaka to the East. This is evident from the similarity in the coins of these two rulers. On this particular coin the bull is shown distinctly with a raised tail, which in all likelihood suggests the ritual ‘letting free’ of the animal, as prescribed in the ‘Vrishotsarja’ sacrifice.
