Ancient West Marathwada / East Vidrabha, Monarchical coinage of pre-Satvahanas period, c.150-100BC, Patalatolata, Alloyed copper Fractional coin, 1.92g, Obv: Bull standing to right, Shrivatsa in its front, Brahmi legend “Patalatoļatisa” above, Rev: “Sunburst” motif, surrounded by symbols, Shrivatsa at 12 and 6 o’clock (only one visible), three-arched hill surmounted by crescent at 9 and 3 o’clock (Unpublished in major sources). Very fine, extremely rare. From numismatic evidence, Patalatolata appears to be an independent king contemporary to Satavahana king Satakani. It is likely that he carved a short-lived kingdom in Central Maharashtra and parts of Vidarbha in mid-2nd century BC. It is very rare to find a fractional issue with full typological details visible, as they are on this specimen.
