Satavahanas, Nasik / Junnar region, Kanha (Krishna), c.110-100BC, Copper, 2.25g, “Lion” type, Obv: Maned Lion standing facing left, Swastika behind, Brahmi legend “Kanhasa” above, Rev: Elephant standing facing right, two Swastikas alternating with Shrivatsa above. Very fine, extremely rare. Kanha or Krishna features in the Puranic list as the successor of Chhimuka the progenitor of the Satavahana dynasty. It is not yet certain if he ruled as a full king, or just a representative of his brother Satakani. The only known inscription mentions his rule, but not to him as a ‘king’ and on coins his name is without any royal titles. His coins are extremely rare and historically very significant.
