Satavahanas, Siri Satakani (c.100-50BC), Alloyed Copper, 6.02g, “Abhisheka Lakshmi” type, counterstruck on a ‘Shrivatsa’ type coin (see below), Obv: Goddess Lakshmi seated in a yogic posture on a Lotus with extended hands holding a Lotus, surmounted by an Elephant, in each. The Elephants lustrate the Goddess with water-pots held in their trunks, Brahmi legend “Raño Siri Satakani…” above and three-arched hills in lower corners, Rev: Ujjain symbol with Swastikas in orbs, enclosed in a rectangular border. Traces of an under type legend “Raño Siri Sataka…” to right and outlines of a Shrivatsa along the top margin. Extremely fine, extremely rare. This coin is evidently counterstruck upon another type of Siri Satakani from the Junnar area. It is interesting to note the typological cross-striking of Satavahana issues at Junnar – so far we know of the Naganika and Satakani issues struck over ‘seated lion’ type, and the ‘Junnar lion’ type struck over the issues of Naganika. This specimen adds yet another interesting instance to this jigsaw, which is very important for offering an intraregional chronology for Junnar’s constituent regionally specific types.
