Maharathis of the later Satavahana period, Marathwada – Vidarbha area, Maharathi Data…, Lead unit, 4.40g, Obv: Three-arched hill with crescent, Brahmi legend Maharathi Data… around, Rev: Tree with large leaves in a railing (Unpublished and hitherto unknown). Very fine. The coins of Maharathis in the Marathwada – Vidarbha region are a recent discovery. The issues of Talathati, Sirimata andSiva Vijhasati have been published, however they are all of arsenical copper alloy. This coin, of the same typology as these issues, is of lead. Although the legend is truncated it is certain that this is an issue of an unknown ruler whose name begins with ‘Data’.
