Pre-Satavahana Deccan, Central Maharashtra, Balamitra, Alloyed Copper, 3.36g, Obv: Elephant walking to right with trunk raised, “Ujjain” symbol behind, Brahmi legend “…lamitasa” inscribed above, reading anticlockwise outwards, Rev: Tree with large leaves, small symbols between branches (Unreported in major publications). Very fine+, extremely rare. The coins of Balamitra have been recently known and add further to our knowledge of the political picture of post-Mauryan / pre-Satavahana Deccan. Balamitra appears to have been a ruler of a small kingdom in Central Maharashtra, possibly a contemporaty to other rulers like Kutapada, Sebaka and Vigra.
