Copper Paisa, 11.59g, Lahore Mint, in the name of Alamgir II, AH 1172/ RY 6, Obv: Farsi legend Sikka Mubarak Alamgir with AH date, Rev: Farsi legend Fulus Zarb Lahore followed by a mark of Trishul and RY in lower divide (M&W# T3a). Very fine+, extremely rare. The Marathas occupied Lahore at the end of 1758, after driving away the Afghans under Timur Shah, appointed Nizam by his father Ahmad Shah Durrani. The Maratha occupation lasted for just over four months, when the sudden death of their ally Adina Beg prompted Ahmad Shah to launch his fifth invasion into the Punjab, which ultimately culminated in the famous battle of Panipat almost two years later. Coins struck towards the end of the Maratha occupation of Lahore show symbols of distinct Maratha affinity. Silver rupees dated AH1172/RY6 bear the symbol of Maratha flag ‘Jaripatka’ on them. To this, this paisa with same date/RY combination can now be added – it has a symbol of Trishul which conforms as a counterpart to the flag symbol seen on silver rupees.
