Nadir Shah Afsharid, Silver Rupee, 11.28g, Struck at Dar ul-Khilafat Shahjahanabad Mint during Nadir Shah's brief occupation in Delhi, AH 1151. Extremely fine, extremely rare. Nadir Shah invaded India in AH 1151 and defeated the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah. He then marched on to Delhi (Shahjahanabad). Khutba was read and coins were issued in his name, as he declared himself the new master of India. Nadir Shah held the city for few months and during his occupation ordered an infamous massacre of people of Delhi. He then returned it to Muhammad Shah in AH 1152 in exchange of vast booty including famed treasures like the Kohinoor diamond and the 'Peacock Throne'. This coin is an exceptionally handsome example of the short-lived coinage of Nadir Shah struck at Delhi.
