Humayun, 1st reign, Silver Rupee, 11.06g, Adl Husainabad Mint, AH 9XX, Obv: Arabic legend “Muhammad Humayun Ghazi” In circle, “al-Sultan al-‘Azam al-Khaqan Khallada Allah Mulkahu wa Saltanahu Adl Husainabad” in margins, Rev: Shahada in circle followed by Arabic legend “Yarzaq Allah Mantashao Ba-Ghayr Hisab” crudely engraved (Not listed in G&G). Unique so far. Extremely fine, exceedingly rare. It is not often that a new mint is discovered for an early Mughal ruler. Husainabad was the capital of later Sultans of Bengal and founded by Alauddin Husain Shah the progenitor of the Husaini dynasty. It was located near the ancient capital of Bengal, Lakhnauti or Gaur. The coin is also historically significant as an issue of Humayun from his short-lived campaign and stay against Sher Khan the Afghan in Bengal, during which he struck some of the earliest Mughal coins on the rupee standard, closely following his rival. However, the mint-names on these coins refer to only the provincial standard (‘Adl Bangalah) and not a specific place name. This coin rectifies that trend. Humayun’s estimation of the power and ambition of Sher Khan went terribly wrong and it resulted in his eventual escape from North India, losing all the gains his father Babur had made.
