Post Mauryan, Ancient Eastern Malwa, Monarchical coinage of Tripuri region, Agiguta (Agni Gupta), Lead, 8.76g, Obv: Human figure standing on inverted curve with triangle inside, Brahmi legend “Raño Agigutasa” around (Not listed in PAIC). Unique so far. Very fine for type, extremely rare.
The region of Tripuri emerged as a localized polity with its own set of local rulers in post-Mauryan times. So far, only the rulers with ‘-Mitra’ and ‘-Datta’ ending names were known; these were first brought to notice by late R R Bhargava of Jabalpur in a series of articles. This is the first instance of a ruler with a ‘-Gupta’ ending name being known and as such adds an important nugget of data to the story of post-Mauryan regional state formation.
