Maharathis in Central Maharashtra, Varuni Maharathis, (c. 175-200AD), Copper, 4.79g, Obv: Bold punch with symbol consisting of a triangle-headed standard, flanked by a circle and a hook, and four Swastikas at cardinal points, Rev: Obliterated (Unpublished in major publications). Extremely fine, extremely rare. The ‘circle and hook’ was a characteristic symbol of the Varuni Maharathis who appear to have struck an independent coinage in Central Maharashtra towards the end of second century AD. This coin is most likely an issue of Maharathi Pusavaruni, revalidated in circulation by application of a dynastic countermark.
