Western Kshatrapas, Newase-Paithan series, Kshaharata house, Nahapana (c. 33-78 AD), Alloyed Copper, 5.34g, “Thunderbolt / tree” type, counterstruck over a Satavahana coins, Obv: Thunderbolt and arrow symbol, partly visible with Brahmi legend “…tapasa Na…” counterstruck on an Elephant (legs visible), Rev: Traces of a tree in railing counterstruck over a tree in railing from the Satavahana under type (Not listed in Fishman). Very fine, extremely rare. Owing to the similarity between motifs, usually the tree device of Nahapana is found counterstruck on the elephant motif of the Satavahana coins. However, in this coin, this is not the case – here a Kshatrapa ‘tree’ device is counterstruck on a Satavahana ‘tree’ device. This makes the coin exceptionally rare.
