Ancient Malwa, Aulikaras of Mandasor, Naravarman of the first Aulikara dynasty, Copper, 1.02g, Obv: An ornate wheel (Chakra) symbol, Rev: Three-arched hill surmounted by crescent and flanked by sun and moon in centre, legend in Gupta Brahmi “Maharaja Naravarmasya (Olikarasya)…” around (Unpublished in major sources). Very fine, extremely rare. The Aulikaras came into prominence as feudatories of the Guptas. From inscriptional evidence there appear to be two branches – an earlier one and a later one. It is not known if the two were related in any way. Naravarman is a ruler from the first branch. He was most likely appointed as a feudatory (Rajasthaniya) in Northern Malwa by Samudra Gupta.
