Chaul, D. Sebastiao, Copper 4 Bazarucco, 17.32g, Obv: Stylized representation of a shield (Portuguese royal emblem), Rev: A bunch of three arrows and a bow, symbolizing the Christian saint St Sebastian. Very fine for type, extremely rare. Chaul is located in Notthern Konkan and emerged as a great trading hub in the medieval period. The Portuguese established a colony at Chaul in 1521 and it remained under Portuguese control until 1740, when Peshwa Bajirao liberated the entire North Konkan in a concerted anti-Portuguese campaign. 4-Bazarucco is the heaviest denomination in this very rare series of early Indo-Portuguese coinage struck at Chaul.
