Ancient Deccan, Pre-Satavahana period, Marathwada / West Vidarbha region, Uninscribed die-struck Alloyed Copper, 6.21g, Obv: A representation of the Abhisheka Lakshmi motif – Lakshmi standing on a lotus, being lustrated by two Elephants holding water pots in their trunks while standing on lotuses, on either side. Some traces of an under type visible, Rev: Bull walking to right on top of a rectangular altar (most likely a representation of a Vedic sacrifice), counterstruck on a motif consisting of a river symbol. It is likely that the motif was a Makara, but it has been obliterated by the Bull. Very fine+, extremely rare. A highly unusual and important type of local uninscribed die-struck coinage that evolved in the Deccan after the Mauryan period.
